Olivia Munn and John Mulaney have built a pretty great family together in recent years. They share 3-year-old son Malcolm and 7-month-old daughter, Méi.
These days, they’ve settled into family life, but it was a little hectic in the beginning. During an interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers, the 44-year-old actress revealed her mom hadn’t even met John until after the birth of Malcolm.
So Malcolm was born the day before Thanksgiving and my mom comes, first of all, never met John by this point. And so she arrives with a suitcase from Oklahoma. She doesn’t even say hi to John. She just unzips her suitcase, takes out frozen turkeys because she’s like, ‘It’s from Oklahoma.’
Totally normal to fly with frozen turkeys, right? Apparently, the turkeys weren’t just for eating. They were to “continue” a family tradition.
She says to John, ‘You know, it’s so exciting in my family with all of our kids — the tradition — we put a drumstick in their hand for their first Thanksgiving when they’re baby.’ And John was like, ‘Oh, that’s cool,’ He says to me, ‘Hey, your mom’s gonna do this thing.’ I was like, ‘That is not a tradition. What is she talking about?’
Munn then called her siblings to make sure she wasn’t forgetting, and they confirm that no such tradition ever existed in their family. Turns out, her mom just wanted to start a new tradition.
So in this photo, John’s holding Malcolm. My mom gets her turkey leg. She puts it there. She pats his hand and goes, ‘Okay, a new tradition,’
