Chasing her truth? That’s what Tia Mowry did when she filed for divorce from Cory Hardrict last year. The divorce was a shock to many. After all, the pair had been married for 14 years and share two kids together, a 12-year-old and a 5-year-old.

In a recent cover story for HelloBeautiful, the former ‘Sister, Sister‘ actress opened up about the divorce, explaining that her kids did play a factor in her decision.

A part of my decision was also for them. For them seeing their mother walk in truth, I feel like it’s a great lesson for them because it was not an easy decision. It was one of the hardest decisions that I had ever had to make in my entire life. But if they see that mommy can do it, that mommy, no matter what people say, no matter, even if there’s some sort of doubt, whatever, mommy pushed through.

She explained how she wants her kids to look at her and see that she’s living her best life. She wants them to know she’s chasing her truth, and she wants the same for them in their own lives.

The 44-year-old actress also explained how she wants them to know that it’s okay to have a bad day.

I want them to see that it is okay to have a bad day. I want them to see that it is okay to chase your joy. I want them to see that it is okay to live your truth.

All great lessons in life. You’re going to fail. You’re going to get knocked down. You’re going to have lots of bad days, but the goal is to have more good days than bad. For a long time in life, I was so focused on never having a bad day. Trying to avoid any negative thoughts or emotions because they made me uncomfortable.

But sometimes it’s okay to be uncomfortable. Actually, sometimes it’s necessary.

So good on Tia for giving her kids that lesson early in life.
