Yesterday, Pete Buttigieg’s husband, Chasten Buttigieg, went on his Instagram account to share photos from their twins’ first birthday party.
In the adorable photos, you can see both Penelope and Gus enjoying handfuls of cake.
Gus wore a multi-colored printed shirt as he devoured the dessert with his hands. Little Penelope, wearing a pink Hawaiian print shirt, looked off camera after snacking on her portion of the treat.
Chasten captioned the post, saying the birthday party was a “smashing success” and that both he and Pete are grateful for all the love and guidance they’ve received as new parents this past year.
And they have needed all the love and guidance because parenting has not been easy for them. Back in November of last year, Gus was rushed to the hospital and had to spend three weeks in and out of a hospital room. Pete and Chasten did not share what illness he had, but Chasten tweeted about how thrilled they were to have him back home.
After 3 weeks in and out of hospitals, 125 miles in an ambulance, and a terrifying week on a ventilator, Gus is home, smiling, and doing great! We’re so relieved, thankful, and excited for him and Penelope to take DC by storm! Thank you so much for all of the love and prayers.
Pete and Chasten got married in 2018 and last August, they announced they had become parents for the first time. It was something they had wanted for a long time.
A couple months after welcoming their twins, Pete spoke to MSNBC about how parenting was going.
I used to think of 5 a.m. as early. Now, I think of it as naptime if I’m lucky. And yet, I catch myself grinning half the time. It’s been wonderful. It’s everything people tell you to expect and more. I think the biggest thing that surprised me is just how much joy there is even sometimes in the hard parts.
We wish them nothing but continued success!
