Meghan Markle’s new “Archetypes” podcast has been making the headlines recently, thanks to some really in-depth conversations with celebrities like Mariah Carey, Serena Williams, and now Mindy Kaling.

The comedian/actor/writer/director talked with Markle about what life is like as a single mother. She admits in the interview that she never expected to be a single mother. In fact, when she was younger, she would write in journals about how she was going to be married to some dude named Josh by the time she was 24.

But when she turned 24, her career was just getting started. She was a writer on ‘The Office‘ and wasn’t ready to settle down yet.

I was just happy to be in SAG (Screen Actors Guild) and have health insurance. This idea that you would jeopardize any of that with something personal — you know, I was just so focused on keeping that job and earning money and earning a good reputation professionally.

But now, at 43-years-old, Kaling is learning to find a balance between her personal life and her career.

During the podcast, Kaling admitted she worries about her kids growing up without a father.

I do know that would be so valuable for my kids, that they have a dad. I do think about it with wistfulness, and then also fear, like, what will they think when they get older about that? Why not me? Why am I not the person that got married? I’m still examining it. It makes me emotional.

And while she still struggles some days, she wouldn’t change the life she has built for herself. She has a wonderful support system around her, including a trusted live-in nanny.

I am often amazed at how different my life looks now. I’m 43. I have two kids. I live with a nanny whom I love. I have my community that allows me to have that decision, and also I waited until I was in my late thirties to have children, because I knew I needed the resources to be able to do it comfortably.

It just goes to show you that life may not go according to plan, but if you keep your head up, you’ll eventually find your own sweet spot. It may look different than other people’s sweet spot, but that’s okay.
