It’s not easy sending your kid off to college. After all, you’ve raised them since they were a baby! Dropping them off at some college, away from their friends and family, is an emotional experience.

Just ask Kate Hudson. The 43-year-old actress recently spoke with Access Hollywood about how she’s been feeling since dropping her 18-year-old son Ryder off at college.

It’s hard to even talk about. I’ll have a moment where I’ll just start crying because something will just hit me that he’s not here. But he’s having a blast, he’s in the city, he’s like ready. And that makes me so excited. I’m so excited for his future. When you see your kids thriving and feeling good in their skin that’s all I can ask for.

Hudson shares Ryder with her ex-husband, Chris Robinson. She is also a mother to 11-year-old Bing, and 4-year-old Rani Rose, so she still has kids in the house to keep her company.

But still, seeing your first-born exit the home can leave an empty space in your heart. It can also spark memories within yourself.

Hudson recalled a recent phone call she had with Ryder…

He was in such a good place and I remember that time in my life when everything in front of you is possible. And I could see it in him and I was just so overwhelmed and I was going to cry.

Rani asked her mom if she was crying “happy tears” and Hudson nodded.

Sounds like Hudson is doing something right as a mother. Before Ryder left for college, he spent a lot of time with his younger brother, even having a jam session in their garage.

We’re sure that’s a memory his little brother will hold for a long time.
