Unless you’re a saint, chances are you’ve, uh, borrowed a few pieces of candy from your kids’ trick-or-treat haul. It’s only fair, right? After all, you bought their costume and walked miles with them through the neighborhoods. You deserve something for your hard work!

The only problem is that sometimes, your kids don’t want to share. And if that’s the case, Kelly Clarkson and actor Michael Ealy have some tips and tricks for you.

During a special segment on Kelly Clarkson’s daytime show, she talked to Michael about how she steals her favorite pieces of candy from her kids while they’re sleeping.

I’m sneaky, like as a parent… I totally steal their candy while they’re sleeping. They go to bed and I find my favorite things, and I’m like, ‘Yeah, that’s mine!’ And they won’t remember, I’ll be like, ‘Oh, I don’t know, I guess you’d didn’t get that. I guess that didn’t make it into the bag.’

Ealy laughed and gave Kelly a high-five, then explained his strategy, which is pretty similar to Kelly’s.

I lie or I act as best as I can on Halloween night. I’m like, ‘Okay kids, it’s great. You got your candy; this is wonderful. Listen, you got a big day tomorrow at school, so we can’t eat all of this candy now. Just give it to me; you guys go to bed and it’ll be here in the morning. You can take little pieces every day moving forward.’ Them cats go to sleep; I sit on the couch — I start combing through. I get all of the Reese’s Cups that I can, and I leave like one or two in their baskets so they don’t feel like, that they’ve been stolen.

Ah, yeah. He knows what he’s doing. That’s the key. You have to leave at least a couple pieces of the good candy or else they’ll know something is wrong.

And some of you might be thinking, “Why can’t you just buy your own candy?” and to that I say… IT’S NOT THE SAME!!!
