Does a perfect parent exist? Probably not. Drew Barrymore, perhaps one of the most adored actresses in Hollywood, appeared on the Chicks in the Office podcast this week.

And during her appearance, she opened up about motherhood, and admitted to feeling like a failure when her daughters (Frankie, 8, Olive, 10) were younger.

She remembered how often her daughters would ask for fast food and she would just give in and let them have it.

All those parents who have it all together, and they’ve got hygiene and nutrition and schedules and boundaries, God bless you. I didn’t know any of that stuff when I had my kids. I did not have the blueprint. I felt like a failure a lot.

She remembered feeling very overwhelmed. “I was learning on the job,” she revealed.

These days, she’s slowly starting to figure it out, but as her kids grow older, new challenges pop up. As a parent, you’re pretty much always learning on the job.

But she has learned something very important, and that’s boundaries.

It’s funny, I was so unforgiving of myself when my kids were younger and now that they’re almost — Frankie’s almost 9 and Olive’s like 10, it’s shifted into something very different and I’m having the best time ever. I have learned boundaries.”

Barrymore also shared that she thought it was important for her to discuss her failures as a parent because she’s in the public eye. She believes it’s “empowering” to admit your flaws, and we do not disagree.

Social media loves to promote perfection, but as a parent, that’s just not possible.
