‘American Idol’ alum Katharine McPhee (38) and her 73-year-old husband David Foster shocked the world in 2021 when they welcomed their first son together. Many people questioned the decision, given Foster’s age, but the new parents haven’t let the critics get them down.
During an interview with PEOPLE, the music producer talked about how having a son is an entirely new experience for him. You see, he already has six children, but they’re all girls… or well, women now.
I had all daughters until my son and I love all my daughters immeasurably, but having a son is a little bit different.
But what’s also different is Foster’s age, obviously. He admits that having a toddler at age 73 is a little unusual, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad.
At this point in my life, it’s different again. Not better or worse, just different. I still work, I’m still gone a lot, but maybe the time is a little more precious to me because I got more runway behind me than I have ahead of me now.
He admitted raising a toddler requires patience, which is something he has a lot more of now, “I was not patient when I was young,” he recalled.
Foster also acknowledged the people questioning his decision to have another kid so late in life.
It’s a valid question. But I think that I can offer one thing to Rennie even though I won’t be around when he’s 50 or 40 even, or 30 maybe. I think I can offer him wisdom from my 72 years on the planet. And maybe that’s not a bad trade-off. I hope so.
To see his son turn 30, Foster would need to live until he’s 100, which is certainly possible, but probably not likely.
