Ashton Kutcher loves acting, but he loves his family much more. The 44-year-old comedian/actor stars in the new Netflix film, Your Place or Mine, alongside Reese Witherspoon.

And during the premiere of the film, Kutcher talked to PEOPLE and revealed his number one role in life is father, which is why he took a pretty big pay cut so that production on this film could move closer to home.

For me, the No. 1 role I will ever play is to be a father. I’m fortunate enough to be able to do something like that, which most people aren’t. But when you get to a point where you’re fortunate enough to be able to do that, and you can, you either live to do that truth or you don’t.

Kutcher shares two kids (6, 8) with his wife Mila Kunis. They have a pretty strong bond as a family unit.

While talking to PEOPLE, Kutcher shared a wonderful quote:

Carlos Slim has this amazing quote, and he said, ‘A lot of people try to make the world a better place for their children. And what they should really be doing is making better children for the world.’ And I repeat it all the time, because I think there’s so much truth in it. So my No. 1 job in the world is making better children for the world, and I’m trying my hardest.

I think we can all get behind that quote. The children are and will always be the future, so if you’re raising great ones, then the future looks bright.

By the way, so far, Kutcher’s kids have not expressed interest in acting, and that’s perfectly fine with him…

I don’t think they’ve ever expressed an interest in [acting]. If they ever did, I’d be fine with it. They’re going to do what they’re going to do. And I have no hubris about the notion that I have any control over what they choose to do. I just hope that I can make them really good decision-makers.
