Taboo topics? Not in the Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard household. The 42-year-old ‘Frozen‘ star sat down for an interview with Real Simple and she explained that she has had very difficult conversations with her and Dax’s daughters (8-year-old Delta and 9-year-old Lincoln).
She said she hates the word “taboo” and believes it should be “stricken” from the dictionary.
There should be no topic that’s off the table for people to talk about. I talk to my kids about drugs, and the fact that their daddy is an addict and he’s in recovery, and we talk about sex. There are all these ‘hard topics’ that don’t have to be if you give the person on the other end your vulnerability and a little bit of credit.
For those who don’t know, Shepard has been battling an addiction for over 20 years.
After incurring several motorcycle injuries — which resulted in seven surgeries — Shepard spent years battling between medicating himself for legitimate pain and abusing drugs.
He recently had a relapse in September of 2020, breaking over 16 years of sobriety, but he was able to call himself out on it and apologize to Bell and the rest of their family. Bell said apologizing is a very important thing in their household.
If there’s one thing I want to teach my kids, it’s how to make amends — and that it’s for themselves, so they can like who’s in the mirror a little bit more.
