Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas are now traveling the world with their 15-month-old daughter Malti and absolutely loving life, but a little over one year ago? It was a completely different story.
For those who don’t know, Malti had to spend the first 100 days of her life in the NICU. Nick and Priyanka haven’t talked much about this scary time in their lives, beyond thanking the nurses and doctors at the hospital.
But during a recent conversation with Today, the 40-year-old actress/mother talked about how difficult those first few months were.
I realized very, very early that I did not have the luxury to be scared or to be weak because she was scared and weak. And I had to be her strength as her mom. I needed to make her feel at every given moment that she’s not alone … that we’ve got her.
For Priyanka, the scariest time was actually when Malti was allowed to leave the hospital and come home.
[In the NICU], you know your child is alive because you can see their heartbeat (on the monitor). I couldn’t sleep for days because now suddenly she was home without a monitor. I used to put my ear on her chest. I would wake up every couple of minutes just to see if she was OK. For weeks, this went on.
Things are much calmer these days. She revealed that Malti has never been without one of them, which is pretty impressive because they have remained fairly active in their respective careers.
She says because of her daughter, she has a much better work-life balance. Once her work day is over, it’s completely over. She doesn’t take anymore calls or reply to any emails. It’s all about her family.
After that, I’m not available. We do bath time, storytime, bedtime. And then it’s our time (for me and Nick), whether we … have friends over or just sit together and watch a movie.
