35-year-old Grammy winner Adele attended the annual Women in Entertainment Gala this past week, and she was honored with the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award.
During her speech, she talked about the moment she found out she was pregnant 11 years ago, during the height of her fame.
I could only call it pandemonium ’cause that’s how it felt to me. Overnight, it was like I was famous. It was the strangest, most surreal experience of my life ’til to this day. Getting pregnant to many would be — and was considered — career suicide. But I was always one to go against the grain.
In fact, she credits her pregnancy with helping her have a healthier relationship with fame.
It was there and then that I chose to reject the scarcity of success and the idea that you have to be constantly relevant to be successful. And that perhaps, just maybe, I could be a hit both on and off the stage. You’ll never guess what? I f—ing got away with it.
She did indeed, but honestly, I don’t know if many people could get away with it. She is such a talent, combining outstanding vocals with heartbreaking lyrics. Not many artists can match her, so people are willing to wait a little longer in between albums.
I’m sure her reps were freaking out at the time.
