38-year-old singer-songwriter Lily Allen talked to the Radio Times Podcast this week, and she got real about how being a parent can impact one’s career.
She started out by making it clear she loves her children. For those who don’t know, she has two daughters (12, 11) with her ex-husband, Sam Cooper. They divorced in 2018, and Allen is now trying marriage again with ‘Stranger Things‘ star, David Harbour.
My children ruined my career. I love them and they complete me, but in terms of pop stardom, totally ruined it. It really annoys me when people say you can have it all because, quite frankly, you can’t.
We suppose there is some truth to that. Just look at Rihanna. She recently gave birth to two children, and while she’s still extremely successful, her music career has taken a hit. She hasn’t released new tunes in a minute.
Some people choose their career over their children, and that’s their prerogative. But my parents were quite absent when I was a kid, and I feel like that really left some nasty scars that I’m not willing to, you know, repeat on mine. o I chose stepping back and concentrating on them and I’m glad that I have done that because I think they’re pretty well-rounded people.
You definitely don’t want to be one of those celebrities who just have their nanny do all the parenting. Kids need their parents.
Maybe Allen can ignite her career again when her kids go off to college!
