Kristen Bell is teaming up with Michelle Obama and PLEZi Nutrition in an effort to help kids make healthy food and drink choices.
But during a conversation with PEOPLE, the 43-year-old actress pointed out how mental health is just as important.
She shared how she and Dax Shepard live by one very important rule in their house, and it’s all about conflict resolution.
We always make up in front of them if anyone gets snarky or frustrated or fights, which we all do. We do not have the makeup, our conflict resolution, be behind closed doors. Even if at dinner, let’s say, one of us is frustrated and is a little snarky and then we go to bed. We’ll apologize to each other the next morning. Then we will apologize and make amends to each other in front of the kids so that they can see how conflict resolution actually happens.
That is such an important lesson for kids to see. They need to see that arguments are going to happen, but it’s how you handle them that makes all the difference. If you can show them how to respectfully disagree with one another, then you’re doing something right.
For those who don’t know, Dax and Kristen share two kids together, 11-year-old Lincoln and 9-year-old Delta.
In addition to the mental health tip, Kristen also talked about dietary health as well, revealing she tries to keep her kids away from added sugars. She doesn’t give her kids sugary drinks because she doesn’t want their palates to get confused…
Kids receive a lot of the added sugar in their diet. Then, their palates grow up expecting added sugar, which leads to health risks that no one wants to consider. Starting kids early with less sugar in their diet, I think, is brilliant.
