Former ‘Parks & Rec‘ star Amy Poehler doesn’t talk much about her parenting life. In fact, some of you may not even know she is a parent!
The 50-year-old actress shares two sons, 15-year-old Archie and 13-year-old Abel, with her ex Will Arnett.
During a recent episode of Dax Shepard’s ‘Armchair Expert‘ podcast, Poehler spoke a little about life as a parent to two teen boys. And as you might imagine, it’s not exactly easy.
She talked about how she sees them disconnecting when she gives them advice or tries to relate to their struggles with a long story of her own…
Why can’t we stop at the empathy part and not have to give the fix part? As well intentioned and as sensitive and thought out and connected as the second part is I think it gets kids feeling, like, expectation — they wanna do it for you. I just find for me, when I start to [give advice], it’s where I lose them.
Back in 2022, she shared a similar statement, noting how she has to use reverse psychology on her kids if she wants them to like something she likes…
You can’t come in front of anything and say something is funny or good. That’s not going to happen. You’re going to be immediately rejected. So you have to reverse psychology words. You have to put things on and be like, ‘Huh, what’s this stupid thing?’ ‘Okay, I guess Airplane is funny, whatever.’ I have to have a real light touch because they will not love what we love.
It’s so funny how kids of celebrities are never impressed by their parents’ stardom.
