Country music superstar Luke Combs just dropped a new album last week, appropriately titled, Fathers & Sons.
For those who don’t know, the 32-year-old musician shares two sons with his wife, Nicole. Their youngest, Beau Lee, was born just 10 months ago.
And during a lengthy conversation with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, Combs revealed he actually missed Beau’s birth because he was in Australia at the time. He recalled just how emotional it was for him to miss his son’s birth, breaking down crying as he told the story of that day.
So it’s August 16th. I wake up in the morning, I’m in Sydney, Australia, in a hotel room, and we’re on tour in Australia. I probably woke up at around 8:00 a.m. or something like that, Australia time, and I had a text from my wife and it said, ‘I’m so sorry, I really tried to not have the baby while you’re gone.’ And God, dude, it sucked.
He tried to fight back the tears as he told the story, but he was not successful. His voice cracked several times as you could tell just how painful this memory was for him.
The good news is that he was able to watch the birth via FaceTime, but still, it’s not the same…
That was real hard to do and I haven’t really told anybody that. I didn’t cover that too much in this album because it’s really hard for me to deal with. God, it was a hard day, but I was so lucky that a lot of my closest friends now work for me. And so I had a really great support system.
Don’t beat yourself up, Luke! We can tell you’re a great father by how emotional you’re getting. You can’t be there for every milestone, but you just gotta make the most of it when you are there.
