Demi Lovato grew up in the spotlight. She was a Disney Channel star and then became a pop singer. These days, she’s 31-years-old and reflecting a little bit on her childhood, or lack thereof.
She’s about to release a new documentary titled, Child Star, and during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lovato was asked if she’d let her future daughter join the entertainment business.
Lovato gave a very real and honest answer…
I’d say, ‘Let’s study music theory and prepare you for the day you turn 18, because it’s not happening before that. Not because I don’t believe in you or love you or want you to be happy, but because I want you to have a childhood, the childhood that I didn’t have.’
She also said she’d encourage them to have a backup plan. It’s something she wishes she had at the moment, as she admitted that her heart isn’t really into music anymore, but she still has to do it because that’s where her paycheck comes from.
Lovato didn’t have it easy growing up. Sure, she was a huge star, but her home life wasn’t great. Her family used her as the breadwinner, so she felt pressured to keep making money.
She also thought her success would lead to a reunion with her birth father…
I think part of me always thought that if I made it in the industry that I would get the love from my birth dad that I didn’t have. And he was troubled, and I think I always chased success because I knew it would put me in his line of sight again and it would make him proud of me.
