As most of you know, ‘Game of Thrones‘ actress Sophie Turner and boy band star Joe Jonas had a fairly nasty divorce last year. They went through a lengthy custody battle and each side spread rumors about the other.
During a new interview with The Sunday Times, the 28-year-old actress admitted it’s been a “struggle” to raise her two daughters, 4-year-old Willa and 2-year-old Delphine.
She talked about how she relates to her character in the upcoming TV series, Joan. In the series, Turner plays a jewel thief and a struggling single mother.
If I hadn’t been a mother, I don’t know if I would have been able to bring the same energy that I did into it. It’s such a struggle being a single mother. Joan doesn’t go about it in the best way … but it is amazing to see her really fighting for her daughter. It’s also really important for kids to see just how hard parents work for them. The series came around at a time in my life where I had to be ambitious and I had to have such strong will and fight against the forces.
Some people saw this quote and ran with it. They wondered why Turner was calling herself a single mother when she shares custody with Joe.
But if you notice, she doesn’t really call herself a single mother. She simply states how she got strength from her character, who happens to be a single mother.
Turner clarified her comments after the backlash…
I have been widely misquoted today in publications where I have ‘stated’ that ‘it’s such a struggle being a single mother. I’d like to clarify that I was talking about the character of Joan that I play and was not referring to myself. I’m very fortunate personally to have a lot of help around me, which is not the case for a lot of people — I applaud all single mothers doing it alone.
It’s silly she had to clarify this, but hey, good on her! The internet has been hard on her lately.
