As most of you know, actress Hilary Swank waited until much later in life to have kids. The 50-year-old star shocked the world last year when she gave birth to twins, Aya and Ohm.
During a recent conversation with PEOPLE, Swank talked about how focused she was on her acting career throughout much of her life. She admitted to wanting to be an actress since she was 8-years-old.
So throughout her 20s and 30s, starting a family didn’t really cross her mind. She just wanted to be the best actress.
I was really career-focused and I wasn’t ready to have children in my 20s, or really even in my 30s, and then I hit my 40s and I didn’t have a partner. That doesn’t mean I had to have a partner. A lot of people get donors, and that’s a wonderful option, a lot of people adopt, there’s a lot of different ways, and so I was open to anything.
Thankfully, she didn’t have to explore too many options because she met her husband Philip Schneider, and they decided to start a family together.
I was 47 when I got pregnant, and I feel like I have a lot more patience, and I’ve done a lot of my own personal work to be the type of mother I want to be, whereas it would’ve just been different in my twenties and thirties. I don’t think I would’ve had the patience and the grace that I hopefully can bestow a little bit more [of] now.
There’s no “right” way to do it! Everyone starts their parenting journey in their own way. We’re glad she waited until she knew she was ready! We’re sure her kids will be better because of it.
