Drew Barrymore, one of the most beloved actresses in Hollywood, talked to AARP The Magazine this past week.
And during her interview, she opened up about her decision to take an extended break from acting to focus on raising her two daughters: Olive, 11, and Frankie, 9.
In my early 40s I was not learning how to be my own healthy, independent individual, how to be the parent I dreamed to be. Being other people doesn’t help me figure that out right now. And the long hours of doing films were hours I wouldn’t have with my kids. I wasn’t going to do that.
The now 49-year-old star has a much more stable job as the host of her own daytime talk show. It’s different than working on a film because the hours are more office-like (9-5) and she doesn’t have to travel to various locations.
We’re sure once her kids are older, she’ll return to the big screen, but for right now she’s happy with her life.
By the way, she’s recently changed her opinion on having her kids enter the acting world…
When I first had kids, I remember people asking me like, ‘Well, would you want your kids to go into the business?’ And it always gave me such a sad feeling, as if this business was so toxic, like, ‘Ew,’ And I just thought, that’s not how I feel about this business at all. It has given me every opportunity under the sun and I couldn’t appreciate my life more.
