66-year-old actress Angela Bassett talked to the fine folks at the TODAY show this past week to promote her new Netflix series, Zero Day. She stars in the series alongside Robert De Niro.
During the interview, Bassett was asked about her twins, who just recently went off to college. She expected for there to be a lot of tears while dropping them off, but instead she was just so joyful for them.
You know what, no tears. Just lots of joy. You think you’re going to cry, and because you think you are going to do that, it doesn’t happen. I remember when I went to college and how wonderful it was, so, of course, I wanted that for them too, so no cries, no guilt.
For those who don’t remember, it was a long road for Bassett and her husband Courtney B. Vance to have children. After seven long years of IVF, they eventually welcomed fraternal twins, Bronwyn and Slater, via surrogate.
Parenting has been such a joy for Bassett, but she did admit that things were challenging at times because she was trying to balance her career.
I hope that what will come out of that is that they see a mama, a woman, a Black woman achieving her dreams, having success. They’ll see that hard work pays off. And they’ll be about that life for themselves.
