Drew Barrymore had an honest and insightful conversation with ‘Teen Mom‘ alums Briana DeJesus and Mackenzie McKee on her talk show this past week.
After watching a trailer for the upcoming season of Teen Mom: The Next Chapter, the three moms got into a pretty deep conversation about parenting, and how their own childhood has impacted their parenting styles.
Barrymore admitted she still hasn’t forgiven herself yet for her own childhood…
Actions have consequences, and I think I wasn’t willing to blame anyone else. If I had blamed somebody else, I would have forgiven them by now. And I haven’t forgiven myself, and it’s really hard. I want my kids to be kids. I see how important that is now. I didn’t understand that growing up, and I want to protect them so much. Putting the time in.
Barrymore did not have the best relationship with her parents. In fact, she was granted emancipation from her parents at the age of 14.
So it makes sense that she’s extra hard on herself when it comes to parenting. She doesn’t want to repeat the same mistakes her parents made.
Her comments really spoke to DeJesus, who had a similar upbringing…
I want to make sure that my kids feel heard. I want them to feel seen. I want them to feel loved. I want them to feel validated because I didn’t have that as a child, and I think that’s why I did the things that I did because I was searching for it somewhere else.
Difficult conversations to have, but very much needed!
